Tips for creating prompts

Prompts are the instructions you provide to an AI to perform a certain action. We also refer to the prompts more simply as the legal questions you want to ask LawY.

Effective prompting starts by carefully considering the legal question you're addressing. First, clearly identify the issues involved, and second, determine the applicable legal principles. Use LawY to find the relevant principles, cases, primary sources, and concepts. The key is being specific and clear.

That’s why we encourage you to experiment—ask questions, explore the limits, and adapt. If a response isn’t quite right, revise the prompt and try again. This approach not only improves results but also builds AI literacy.

Overview of questions used the webinar

Workflow 1

Example 1
  1. Prompt: What is the position in the UK on the status of Uber drivers?
Example 1
  1. Do I have to comply with a Larke v Nugus Request in VIC?
  2. Is there any case law that discusses Larke v Nugus in Australia?
  3. Case summary - Please provide direct quotations from the judgment to support the court's decision regarding Larke.
  4. Using the following case, draft a reply to a solicitor about their Larke request. https://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/vic/VSC/2018/414.html
Examples of an bad prompt
"Set out the top 3 cases that are authority for Larke v Nugus in Australia. One must be from the last 2 years."

If a prompt is unclear, missing context, or too general, the AI has to guess what you want. This often leads to irrelevant, shallow, or off-target results.

Example 2
  1. Provide a comparative analysis of these cases:

    https://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/vic/VCC/2019/260.html
Example 3
  1. Use the following prompt: Create a checklist for a lawyer

  2. Using the following resources, create an extensive guide and checklist for a lawyer- referencing the relevant rules as well for Probate proceedings:‍
